Inspiring! English and NIE hand in hand @ Presidium

INCORPORATING NEWSPAPER IN CLASS-ROOM TEACHING
Newspaper has become an integral part of our lives. As an educator and leaner it is not just the source of getting information but is also a medium of creating, analyzing, learning and developing various skills in language. The importance of newspaper in classroom has greater significance as now-a days engaging students has become quite a challenging task for educators. The objective behind Newspaper in Education encourages autonomous learning which goes well with primary objective of Presidium , which is to make learners independent.

In Presidium Indirapuram, the middle school (VI-VIII) has integrated English language learning with NIE. This not only has enhanced the quality of teaching-learning but it has also helped in breaking the monotony of learning in a structured way.

The first step towards this direction is using articles as Comprehension Passages. It not only saves the labour and paper but also connects the new generation of language learners to the world of print media. Students paste the articles and answer the questions given by the teacher. It also helps during substitution periods as it makes the substitution periods more productive.

Every day, CTP is being exclusively devoted to newspaper reading. It makes the maximum use of zero period and develops the habit of reading newspaper daily.

Teaching Grammar and vocabulary prove to be quite challenging at times as it requires understanding and application in day to day life. In this regard, newspaper plays a crucial role as the Junk-yard section caters to many topics related to Grammar in an interesting manner. Students enjoy doing the Vocabulary Builder, Crosswords and Word watch section. After solving these sections , once in a week they paste their favourite section in their notebooks that gives them a sense of  relation with that particular section. Likewise, while doing Pronouns students were asked to mark Personal and Possessive pronouns in the newspaper and share with each other.

Similarly, NIE has helped a great deal in factual writing skills  like report writing , article writing and data interpretation as students get to know how to deal with these topics in the most authentic way. Often, we try to derive the formats of these topics using NIE. Similarly, Dialogue Writing  and Picture Description was made interesting by using Cartoon Strips from the newspaper. It not only made the topic more interesting for students but also challenged their creativity.

These are few small steps taken to enhance language learning and hone various skills in students. We strive to come up with more such ideas to make learning and teaching fun for students and teachers, rest as it said Sky is the limit!

‘OER’ FUN

The Sixth Graders were introduced to the concept of ‘Open Educational Resources’.
Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible, openly licensed documents and media that are useful for teaching, learning, and assessing as well as for research purposes. It is the leading trend in distance education/open and distance learning domain as a consequence of the openness movement. There is no universal usage of open file formats in OER.
The development and promotion of open educational resources is often motivated by a desire to provide an alternate or enhanced educational paradigm.

After the chapter ‘Fun with Magnets’ was taught in the class; the learners actively searched the relevant OERs on the topics. In the process they analysed and shared them through mail. The students got to read information from various sources and they were very engaged. They were amazed by the ocean of knowledge available online! Many of them were even ready to forgo their playtime on gadgets!

Nukkad Natak Activity- Grade VIII

NUKKAD NATAK ACTIVITY ON   JUDICIOUS USE OF NON RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Learning Science the Fun way!!    It was actually practised by the students of grade VIII, who enacted a Nukkad  Natak on Judicious use of Non-renewable Resources like coal, petroleum, etc.

The students enacted in groups of 6-7. The know-how of science was beautifully conveyed in a subtle manner, using the dramatics and the oratory skills of students. It was a surprise for the facilitator as well , to see how beautifully a serious topic can be grasped by the learner in a fun Way!!

Students made use of props, songs, etc to make their Natak interesting. Each and every student participated enthusiastically in the activity. It was a good experience for students and they are looking forward to many such activities in future. The Science faculty at Presidium is determined to promote the tradition of experiential learning in students by incorporating innovative methodologies.

Electricity and Circuits- The Dry Cell

As discussed in the earlier post on Electricity and Circuits, this post is about the topic- The dry cell. After the discussion about the Bulb, various sources of electric current were discussed. Structure of Dry cell was dealt with. Negative and positive terminals were discussed.

The Home Task given was: Represent the structure of Dry cell using any software and bring it in pen drive/ mail. The students were eager to present the same.
Here are the slides from the various presentations they made using various digital tools/ websites.

Management of Non-Biodegradable waste...

The 3Rs

Day by day, hour by hour , the need for practicing '3rs' is increasing! We all are aware of the ill effects of the 'Non Biodegradable' wastes but how many of us are actually doing something about it??
The secong half of the chapter 'Garbage In, Garbage out' deals with the management of this type of waste. The 3Rs being-
REDUCE- we need to reduce the amount of waste generated by consuming more and throwing away less. We often buy more things than we actually need. Nowadays, disposable things are becoming very popular.
1 Use fountain pen instead of a ball point pen.
2. Use old newspapers for packaging.
REUSE- We can reduce the waste by reusing certain things for more than one purpose.
  1. Small jars and bottles can be cleaned and use to keep other kitchen stuffs.
  2. Old clothes can be made into usable items like cushion covers , handkerchief etc.
RECYCLE- The process by which waste materials are used to make new products is called recycling. Materials like glass, metals, plastic and paper are collected and recycled to make new things

We need to manage the usage of paper by following these 3 R’s because paper is made from trees and trees are essential for our survival on earth. So, though paper is biodegradable , the depletion of trees at a fast pace is a big concern. Therefore , to save trees we must use paper carefully.

My students presented their thoughts using many digital tools!

Also lets vow to indulge in 'REFUSE' too!

Garbage In, Garbage Out!

Garbage In, Garbage Out

So, that was the topic dealt with the sixth graders in November end! The question is – What does the phrase mean! GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) is a computer science acronym that implies bad input will result in bad output. Its a creative title given to the chapter which deals with the management of types of garbage.

The expected learning outcomes are :-
Ø  To know how can we deal with Garbage and classify into Biodegradable and Non Biodegradable
Ø  To understand about landfill and composting.
Ø  To understand Vermicomposting.
Ø  To understand the 3Rs of managing the non biodegradable wastes.
Ø  To be able to understand Recycling of paper.
Ø  To be able to understand the reason to minimize the overuse of plastics.

The two categories of garbage and ways to deal with garbage were discussed. Use of two different bins to throw biodegradable and non -biodegradable wastes in our daily lives was shared. Various ways to manage the Biodegradable waste was explained like dumping the wastes collected from cities in landfill. Concepts of composting, vermicomposting and role of red worms in composting were discussed.
The students used various digital tools to express their learning! Their happy faces in the class clearly said- 'Learning is Fun indeed!'
